Why first-round screening breaks down

A résumé shows where someone has worked. A screening call shows how well they interview. Neither shows whether they can do the job.

The résumé

Claims, not proof

Strong and weak applicants look the same on paper, and now that every application is polished and keyword-matched, it's harder than ever to tell them apart.

The screening call

Hours of calendar time

Thirty minutes per candidate, scheduled across time zones, mostly spent on questions a short recording could answer.

An Openhire audition

Work you can watch

Every candidate completes the same timed tasks. You review on your own schedule and only book calls with people who've earned one.

Who it's for

Built for a founder's first hire and for a hiring team's hundredth.

Startups & small teams

Hire well without a recruiter.

Founders and hiring managers spend their time on the shortlist, not on intro calls. Add your booth link to the job post and review submissions between everything else.

  • One flat price: $36/month, cancel anytime
  • Ready-made auditions for sales and engineering roles
  • Set up with a founder within one business day

Growing & established companies

Screen consistently, at volume.

Every applicant gets the same tasks, instructions and time limits. Hiring managers compare like with like, and you keep a clear record of what each candidate was asked to do.

  • Invoice billing and annual agreements
  • Security questionnaire and DPA on request
  • Custom data retention and audition design

How it works

From job post to shortlist in three steps.

No scheduling, no live panels, and nothing for candidates to download. Just a link.

01

Build an audition

Start from a template or from scratch. An audition is a short series of timed rounds (camera, screen share, audio or written), each with your instructions and time limit.

02

Share one link

Add it to your job post, ATS or outreach email. Candidates confirm their email, test their camera and mic, read your brief and start when they're ready.

03

Review and shortlist

Watch each round next to the prompt it answers. Everyone did the same tasks, so comparing is quick and fair. Invite the strongest to a live interview.

Audition templates

Start from a ready-made audition. Make it yours in minutes.

Each template is a set of timed rounds built around real work for the role. You can edit every prompt, time limit and recording type.

Sales Coach

5 rounds

See how a coach diagnoses a sales call and gives feedback a rep can act on.

  • 01Rewrite a coaching note
  • 02Explain core sales concepts out loud
  • 03Review a real call clip
  • 04Screen-share a working doc
  • 05On-camera introduction

Software Engineer

3 rounds

Hear how an engineer explains code they've shipped, then watch them fix code that's broken.

  • 01Walk through a past project
  • 02Short break
  • 03Live debugging with screen share

Quick Video Screen

1 round

A lightweight first filter for any role. One timed video replaces the intro call.

  • 01On camera: "Why this role, and why you?"

Hiring for a different role? Build your own audition, or send us the job description and we'll draft one with you.

Blind by default

Judge the work, not how someone looks.

Openhire blurs each candidate's whole video, face included. You still hear every word, see every screen they share and read every answer they write. What you can't see is their appearance, their home, or anything else that has nothing to do with the job.

  • Less room for bias

Looks, age, ethnicity and surroundings can sway a reviewer without them noticing. With the video blurred, attention stays on skill, much like orchestras that audition musicians behind a screen.

  • Candidates feel respected

Nobody has to worry about their appearance, their room or their camera. Candidates focus on doing their best work, and more of them finish your audition.

  • Less personal data to hold

The blur is applied in the candidate's browser before upload, so a clear recording of their face and home is never stored.

Raw camera What your team sees

Drag the slider to compare. Voice, written answers and screen shares stay clear.

Built for both sides of the table

Rigorous for you. Respectful to candidates.

Strong candidates have options. Openhire gives them a calm, private way to show what they can do, so more of your best applicants finish the process.

For hiring teams

Evidence, not scheduling.

  • The same tasks for everyone. Every candidate completes an identical set of timed rounds, so comparisons are fair.
  • Review on your schedule. Watch submissions between meetings, from any time zone.
  • Unlimited auditions. Create one per role, per hiring stage or per hiring manager.
  • Your records, exportable. Download every submission for an audition as a single ZIP file.

For candidates

A private booth, not a stage.

  • Seen for their work. Their video is blurred, face and room included, before it leaves their device.
  • Room to retry. One stumble doesn't end the interview. They can record a round again, up to the limit you set.
  • No surprises. They see the brief, every round and every time limit before they begin.
  • Their data expires. Recordings are deleted automatically after 30 days.

What's included

Everything you need to run async auditions.

Multi-round auditions

Combine camera, screen-share, audio and written rounds, each with its own prompt and time limit.

Time limits & overtime

Set a hard stop or allow a short grace period. Every candidate works to the same clock.

Completion alerts

Get an email, or send a webhook to your ATS, Slack or spreadsheet, the moment a candidate submits.

Screen-share rounds

Watch candidates work in a real doc, codebase or CRM instead of just describing it.

Retakes

Let candidates retry a round up to a limit you set. Fewer nerves means a truer picture of their ability.

REST API

Create auditions and pull results with an API key, so your team or your scripts can run hiring at scale.

Side-by-side review

Play back every round next to the prompt it answers, with instant seeking.

ZIP export

Download an audition's submissions in one file to share with your team or keep on record.

Candidate briefing page

Introduce your company, the role and every round before candidates start, so they know exactly what's expected.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still have a question? Email hello@openhire.team and a founder will reply.

What happens after I subscribe?

Stripe emails you a receipt straight away. Within one business day, we'll email you from hello@openhire.team to activate your account and help set up your first audition. Once it's ready, you can start sending the link to candidates.

Do candidates need an account or an app?

No. Candidates open your link in a desktop browser, confirm their email with a one-time code, check their camera and microphone, and begin. There's nothing to download.

How is this different from one-way video interview tools?

One-way video tools ask candidates to answer interview questions on camera. Openhire asks them to do the work: review a sales call, debug code or edit a document while sharing their screen. You see how they actually work, not just how they present.

Which roles does it work for?

Any role where the work can be shown on camera, on screen or in writing, such as sales, customer success, engineering, support, operations, marketing and design. Templates for sales coaching and software engineering are ready today. For other roles, build your own or ask us to help.

Why blur the candidate's whole video?

So your team judges skill, not appearance. Blurring the whole video, face included, hides cues like looks, age, ethnicity and home surroundings that can bias a reviewer without them realising. You still hear everything the candidate says and see everything they write or share on screen. You'll meet them properly in the live interview.

How is candidate data protected?

Recordings are stored encrypted on AWS and can only be viewed by your team through short-lived, private links. Candidate video is blurred on their own device before it's uploaded. All recordings are deleted automatically after 30 days, and Enterprise customers can agree a different retention period.

Can I cancel?

Yes, anytime. Team has no contract and no notice period. Email us and we'll cancel your subscription. You keep access until the end of the month you've paid for and can export your submissions first.

Do you offer invoicing or annual billing?

Yes, on Enterprise. Contact sales and we'll put together an agreement that fits your procurement process.

What does "founding price" mean?

Teams that subscribe now keep $36/month for as long as they stay subscribed, even if the Team price goes up later.
